CANstruction Reno
Design and Build COmpetition

April 30-may 4, 2025
Center Court Meadowood Mall

Watch creativity come to life — all for a great cause. Stop by to watch the build. Stay to be inspired.

On Wednesday, April 30, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., a record 22 teams will be hard at work building their larger-than-life structures made entirely from canned food right inside Meadowood Mall. Then, from Thursday through Sunday, the completed masterpieces will remain on display for the public to enjoy.

Don’t forget to vote!
Cast your vote online to help shine a spotlight on your favorite creation and help one team claim the coveted People’s Choice Award.

Hosted by the American Institute of Architects Northern Nevada (AIANN), CANstruction Reno combines bold design, teamwork, and compassion — all to benefit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. When the event is over, all canned food used in the displays will be donated to help nourish neighbors facing hunger across northern Nevada and the eastern California Sierra.

Join us at Meadowood Mall and be part of something truly uplifting.
Art with heart. Impact you can see.

CANstruction is organized by American Institute of Architects of Northern Nevada and made possible by Northern Nevada Building Trades Development Corp., Hawkins & Associates, Inc, Hooft Architecture, Fred & Janice Graham, and Linchpin Structural Engineering.  CANstruction is also supported by Meadowood Mall, WinCo Foods, and Freeman.

Help feed thousands with just a couple hours of your time

The dedication of caring, compassionate community members is an integral part of our work, and we welcome and appreciate your time, talent, and interest in joining us in the fight against hunger.  Volunteering is a truly rewarding experience, and we look forward to showing you just how much fun it can be, too.  Together, we can solve hunger!

Whether you are a self-motivated individual volunteer, represent a community or employee group, or are looking for school or work-related, or court-ordered community service opportunities, there’s something for you to do to help at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada.

Distribution Center

It all starts here. Keeping the shelves of our warehouse stocked with food ready to be distributed to neighbors in need is a vital part of the work that we rely on our volunteers to help us with. Volunteers working at the Food Bank’s distribution center take on the task of sorting and packing non-perishable food items generously donated by the community. Our warehouse volunteers also help with packing boxes distributed to seniors through the Commodity and Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) and sorting and packing bulk produce for distribution through our Mobile Harvest program and Partner Agencies. The Food Bank happily welcomes individuals and groups of all sizes to our warehouse.

Volunteer Hours for Warehouse Shifts

We host volunteer sessions in our warehouse Tuesdays through Saturdays at varied times.  Sessions are generally in the afternoons , evenings, and even mornings on Saturdays. The schedule varies based on what food we need to sort and pack so please check the schedule to sign up.  Every 2 hour session in our warehouse helps us to provide food to so many of our neighbors.  Thank you!

Please note: for the safety of our volunteers, Closed-toe shoes are mandatory when volunteering in the warehouse OR AT DISTRIBUTIONS.

Distribute Food in the Community

Want to see the impact you’re having first-hand? Consider volunteering at any of our client distribution programs. We recruit volunteers for Mobile Harvest, Senior CSFP box distribution, and Produce on Wheels throughout our service area.  Closed-toe shoes are required and if you have long hair, we ask that you put it up to keep it out of the food being distributed.

Special Events

Throughout the year, the Food Bank hosts and participates in several community events. Periodically, these events need volunteers to help facilitate and run them. We’d love to have you join us!

Administrative Support

From time to time, the Food Bank needs help with mailings, database management, courtesy calls and other clerical duties in our offices. Administrative volunteers are recruited on an as-needed basis. Please let us know if you’d like to be added to our list of administrative volunteers.

nEED TO CANCEL A SESSION?

We understand that you may sign up to volunteer with the Food Bank and later need to change your plans.  During this time, it is critical that we have an accurate count of the number of volunteers to expect at any of our sessions.  If you need to cancel for any reason, please take the time to let us know either by canceling your registration in CERVIS or contacting our volunteer coordinator Vickie Jarman at vjarman@fbnn.org or 775-785-1431.

Court-Mandated Community Service Policy

Please note: You must contact us prior to scheduling any hours that are to be applied toward court-mandated community service.  Any sessions completed without first receiving approval may not count towards mandated hours.

Charges related to an act of violence of any kind are prohibited.
Every shift must be scheduled in advance.
We require a minimum of 48 hours’ notice. – No walk-ins.
Must provide additional documentation, including specific offense and case number.
Upon completion of hours, we require 72 hours’ notice to prepare verification or completion letter.

Please send your paperwork to Vickie Jarman at vjarman@fbnn.org to get started.

Ready to get started?

Great! Please create your volunteer account by submitting the New Volunteer Application.  You’ll then be able to view all of our current volunteer opportunities and schedule yourself for sessions.  To get started as a new volunteer group, you should also complete the Volunteer Group Request Form. To inquire about current special event or administrative support opportunities, contact our volunteer coordinator, Vickie Jarman.

Important: If you already have a volunteer profile but are having trouble accessing it, please don’t create a new one. This ensures we can accurately celebrate and track your contributions. Instead, contact Vickie Jarman, and she will be happy to assist you.

Tip: If you’ve volunteered with us before, you likely already have a profile!

PLEASE NOTE:
Prior to volunteering, all individuals and groups must make a reservation so we can plan an appropriate task for the number of volunteers.

Have an even Greater Impact

Did you know many employers will make a monetary donation on behalf of an employee as a match for their volunteer hours?  Check to see if your company provides a volunteer match to double the impact your time spent volunteering with the Food Bank will have on our neighbors in need.

REGISTER YOUR FOOD & FUND DRIVE

Whether you decide to host a Virtual or Traditional Food & Fund Drive, the first step is the same.
Complete the Food Drive Form to get started, and we’ll be in touch shortly.

Food and Fund Drives benefiting the Food Bank

Each month, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada helps to feed more than 160,000 neighbors in need in our community, and food and monetary gifts donated by caring community members are a vital part of making that happen.

Food & Fund Drives have played an important role in collecting donations for food banks like Food Bank of Northern Nevada for decades. However, traditional food drives are changing as food pantries and other Food Bank partners continue to seek out fresh, more nutritious food for our neighbors facing hunger.

That’s where the Food Bank’s Virtual Food Drive comes in.

When you host a Virtual Food Drive for Food Bank of Northern Nevada, you are transforming $1 into 3 meals for hungry children, seniors, and families in our community. Better yet, your Virtual Drive will help put fresh foods including produce, dairy and meat, on the tables of those who need it most. The impact is incredible!

Every dollar and every pound of food count, so whether you choose to host a Virtual Food & Fund Drive or want to go the more traditional route, your donations will help us feed those experiencing need right here in our community.

Getting Started with Your Traditional Food Drive

How can I start a Food Drive?
Please register your food drive with our form to get the barrel(s) delivered to you. We will get back to you within 1-5 days from when you submit the form.

How long should I host my food drive for?
You can host a food drive for as long or short of a time as you would like. That said, most food drives are scheduled to last for 3-6 weeks.

When do you need food the most?
February-August are great months to host a food drive. The holidays are a popular time for hosting drives, with more than half of all food drive donations received in November and December. As we move into spring and summer, donations tend to slow while we continue to serve more than 92,000 people each month.

When does your holiday food drive start?
The Food Bank needs food all year round, so there is no start or end date for food drives, even during the holidays.

What if I'd like to have a permanent, year-round food drive?
That’s wonderful! Please submit the Food Drive Form and indicate in the notes that you would like to keep the barrel all year.

What are the most-needed foods?
Access to nutritious food is vital for our neighbors who face hunger, and we ask that those donating food choose the most nutritious items available whenever possible. Please post this list to help your food donors determine what foods to donate.

  • Canned Meals: Stews, Soups, Spaghetti/Ravioli (Low-Sodium Preferred)
  • Protein: Peanut Butter, Tuna, Salmon, Chicken, Dried or Canned Beans
  • Grains: Whole Grain Cereal, Oatmeal, Brown Rice, Whole Grain Pasta
  • Fruits: Canned (Packed in 100% Juice or Light Syrup), Dried Fruit, Applesauce (No Sugar Added), 100% Fruit Juice Boxes
  • Vegetables: Canned (No Salt Added and/or Low-Sodium Preferred)
  • Dairy: Shelf Stable Milk
  • Kid-friendly Snacks: Granola Bars, Popcorn, Animal Crackers, Graham Crackers
  • Baby Products: Formula, Infant Cereal, Baby Food

Please encourage your donors to check expiration dates before donating food items.

What items can you accept? Are there any foods that I shouldn't donate?
For food drives, please donate only non-perishable foods. We CANNOT accept alcohol or alcoholic beverage mixers. Please encourage your donors to check expiration dates before donating food items and to avoid items in glass containers. There are ways to donate perishable food like fruits and vegetables, too. Please let us know if you’re interested in information about perishable food donations.

How do I donate money with our food drive?
Donations can be made online or by mailing a check to:
Food Bank of Northern Nevada
Attn: Jocelyn Lantrip
550 Italy Drive | Sparks, NV 89437

If you have a cash donation that needs to be collected, please contact Jocelyn Lantrip, and she’ll be happy to arrange to pick the donation up from your location.

Food Drive Collection Barrels

What days do you deliver barrels?
We deliver on Tuesdays and Thursdays most of the year. We deliver Monday – Friday starting mid-October through mid-January. We get a high number of Food Drive requests during the holiday season, and our trucks do fill up so be sure to get your form in early!

What time will my barrel arrive?
Our drivers make their own routes each morning, so we cannot guarantee a time. If you need notice before the driver drops off the barrel we can make a note for the driver to call you 30 minutes or an hour ahead of time. Please specify in the notes section when you register your food drive.

Can I pick up my barrel and/or drop off my food at the Food Bank? What are the days/times?
Absolutely. Please contact the Food Bank main line at (775) 331-3663 to let us know you are coming. We can receive food donations between 8am and 4pm at the back of our warehouse. We are located off USA Parkway at 550 Italy Drive in McCarran, NV. If you are interested in touring our facility and learning more about how your donation will be put to use, we would love to show you around when you drop off the food.

Can I pick up my food drive barrel in town?
Typically, barrels are not able to be picked up in town.

The exception to this is our annual Drive-By Holiday Food Drive Kick-Off event. This event is held in early November in the Southeast parking lot of Grand Sierra Resort. This is a quick, easy way to get barrels for your holiday food drive. Pre-register your drive to make things even easier. This year’s Holiday Food Drive Kick-Off will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2019.

How big are the barrels?
Food drive collection barrels are approximately 3 feet tall and have a diameter of 22 inches. Each barrel holds 150-200 pounds of food.

My barrel is full. Can I get it emptied??
Please contact Jocelyn Lantrip to let her know you need your barrel picked up or swapped out for an empty one. Please call when the barrel is 75% full so we have enough time to pick it up before it starts overflowing!

Please note, we swap out barrel(s) on Tuesdays and Thursdays most of the year. From mid-October to mid-January we swap barrels from Monday-Friday.

the ins and outs of food drives

Where can I drop off food in Reno/Sparks if I’m not hosting my own Food Drive?
All Goodwill locations (both stores and donation Xpress) in Reno and Sparks accept food on our behalf and we collect from them regularly. Please see our list of year-round food drives for other locations where you can drop off food. You’re also always more than welcome to drop your donations off right at the Food Bank during our regular office hours.

Do you have any advertising materials?
Feel free to download our logo for use in promoting your food drive. (Vertical Format | Horizontal Format) Please note: If you need more hi-resolution files of the logo, we’re happy to provide that to you. Contact Aramelle Wheeler to request this.

Can I share my food drive on social media?
Please do! We find that the most successful food drives are ones where the host actively advertises the drive, and social media is a great way to spread the word. If you do share on social media, we’d love to see what you’re doing. Please consider tagging us on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. And don’t forget to use our hashtag #iFightHunger.

How will I know how much food my drive collected?
Our Events & Food Drives Coordinator will send your total pounds and dollars raised to you via email once your food drive is over. Food drive pounds are usually processed within 1-2 days of the end of your drive (can be longer during the holiday season).

Can I get a receipt for my food or money donation?
Absolutely. You can download a receipt for your records here.

People all around us are struggling with hunger in silence. Many people feel isolated and alone, when actually, many of their neighbors are going through the same issues that they are. More than 11% of Nevadans face hunger every day.  That means people you see every day are fighting this fight.

Did you know?

  • That one in six of Nevada’s children don’t know where their next meal is coming from.
  • The Food Bank helps an average of 160,000 people each month.
  • More than 32% of the food we distribute is actually fresh produce.
  • About 12,000 people are helped every month through our Mobile Harvest program.

Your support helps people like Robert and his wife, Marie, who recently moved to Fallon. Robert became disabled four years ago, and the year after that, Marie had to retire earlier than they’d anticipated due to an illness.  Now, the couple lives on a fixed income and struggling to just make ends meet.  Read more about how Food Bank programs have helped Robert and Marie.

Use Your VOice to Stand Up Against Hunger

Advocacy is a vital part of the Food Bank’s commitment to alleviating hunger in our community.  The Food Bank of Northern Nevada provides a voice for the 1 in 8 Nevadans who faces hunger every day. That voice is heard in city halls, county government, Carson City, and Washington, D.C.

There is strength in numbers. Our advocacy program relies on passionate people like you to help us achieve our mission and fight for the right of each of our neighbors to have access to the food they need. Make a lasting difference in the lives of your neighbors by joining us in advocating to protect and defend policies that work to close the hunger gap at the federal, state, and local levels.

As 2022 comes to an end, there are two must-pass bills before Congress: the fiscal year 2023 appropriations legislation and the National Defense Authorization Act. These bills contain provisions that would help fund federal nutrition programs and address military hunger.  FBNN is working with our Congressional delegation to help get these bills passed.

Advocacy Mission & Goals

We work tirelessly to reduce food insecurity by promoting policies to increase food security at all levels of government through partnerships with public officials and community advocates.

  • Support, protect, and increase funding for essential hunger relief programs at all levels of government.
  • Partner with Local, State and Federal Agencies to identify opportunities to decrease food insecurity.
  • Build a coalition of public officials and community anti-hunger advocates.

2024 Advocacy Priorities

2024 Farm Bill

The Congress is continuing the work to reauthorize the Farm Bill in they started in 2023.  FBNN is working with our delegation to ensure the next Farm Bill increases investments in The Emergency Food Assistance Program. TEFAP provides our nation’s emergency hunger-relief organizations with food to help serve community members in need.

Congress must prioritize the people and families we see on the frontlines of the hunger crisis every day. Those individuals include working parents who need food banks to supplement the food their children receive from schools, particularly in the summer; seniors who rely on food banks to get enough to eat and stay healthy; families facing medical emergencies who are turning to food banks so they can keep the lights on; and all of those continuing to battle the economic and health challenges brought about by the pandemic.

The Farm Bill is essential to the federal government’s responsibility to grow our economy, strengthen the food supply chain, and serve diverse communities across the nation. Its success is measured by the people and families it assists.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps)

Congress should protect SNAP's structure and funding and strengthen SNAP by adopting the provisions contained in the following bills:

  • Improve SNAP access for older adults, college students, veterans, working families, immigrants and other people who do not qualify for or are unable to participate in SNAP due to eligibility and enrollment barriers.
  • Help more military families access SNAP benefits by excluding the Basic Allowance for Housing from the gross income calculation for SNAP eligibility.
  • Protect SNAP choice and focus on ensuring affordable access to nutritious foods.
  • Adequately fund and improve state employment and training programs.
  • Ensure people receiving SNAP benefits can access training opportunities that align with best practices.
  • Prevent the expansion of SNAP work requirements and preserve state flexibility to respond to local economic conditions.
  •

Support Policies to Enable Easier Food Donation

  • Standardize food donation guidelines to allow the donation of safe wholesome food regardless of the “sell-by” date.
  • Support innovative food rescue programs that help offset the cost to harvest, pack, and transport rescued food.

Child Nutrition

  • To celebrate a success, Nevada is one of 30 states in the process of implementing Summer EBT.  Families with children who are eligible for free and reduced-price school meals will receive $40 per child each month to buy food during the summer, when school is out.
  • Increase the reach of, and the benefits provided through, the summer meals programs.
  • Improve area eligibility requirements so that more communities are able to provide summer and afterschool meals.
  • Provide the opportunity to reach children through alternative delivery models that proved to be critical during the pandemic.

Home Feeds Nevada

In 2024, FBNN will be working with the Nevada Department of Agriculture and the Nevada Legislature to find permanent funding sources to allow the program to grow.

Advocacy Accomplishments

2023

  • SB 341 and AB 525 provided food purchase dollars to help bridge the need following the expiration of pandemic benefits.

2021

  • SB 370: Creates the Home Feeds Nevada Program designed to connect Nevada-produced agricultural products to Nevada’s two food banks.
  • AB 138: Repeals the drug felon ban for SNAP and TANF

2019

  • SB 323: Establish a workfare program in for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in accordance with the requirements set forth in federal guidelines to allow a person to meet the eligibility requirements by participating in such a program. The workfare program must provide that participant will receive benefits at a rate equivalent to the state minimum wage.
  • SB 443: Increases the reimbursement rates for senior meals offered through programs run though Nevada’s Aging and Disability Services Division of the Department of Health and Human Services.

    [body] =>

Become a partnerDo you want to join us as a partner and help with hunger relief efforts in northern Nevada and eastern California? Are you a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the capacity and resources to store and distribute food, meals or other hunger-related services? If so, you may be just the partner we need, especially in areas of our service area that lack emergency food and services.

Our partner agencies distribute directly to those in need and are a vital part of the emergency food chain. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada provides partner agencies access to low- and no-cost food to distribute to clients. We also provide technical assistance and training while we ensure your program meets food safety standards and provides fair and equitable service to clients. Read below to learn about our requirements for partners and some tips for starting a food program.

It is also important to consider partnerships with agencies that already distribute food in your community. It might be more economical for you to provide volunteer or financial support to help them expand their hours or the number of people they serve.

If you do want to proceed, any organization that wishes to partner with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada must meet the following requirements prior to beginning the application process:

    • Be recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, charitable organization, or be affiliated with a 501(c)(3) umbrella organization. Limited exceptions may be made if your church meets the spirit of the criteria used by the IRS to define a church
    • Offer services directly to the ill, needy, or children (under 18 years) free of charge and with no requirement to attend any kind of service
    • Provide an emergency food program, in the form of a food pantry, soup kitchen or shelter.
    • Have a facility able to safely handle and distribute food.
    • Have a record-keeping system that fulfills the Food Bank’s reporting requirements
    • Obtain a food-handlers certification or license
    • We recommended that new agencies operate a food program for at least six months prior to applying

Running a food program is a big responsibility. It requires a major commitment of time, funds and energy.

Once you meet all of the above requirements, becoming a Partner Agency can be very easy. The Food Bank of Northern Nevada accepts applications at any time, however during October-January the application process can take longer than the average 4-6 week time frame.

To get started:

  1. Email Jenny Yeager and include organization name, contact information, mailing and physical address, and hours of operation. (Your service area will be reviewed for unmet needs. If area is underserved, an application packet will be mailed.)
  2. Mail completed request for partnership to:
Food Bank of Northern Nevada – Attn: Agency Relations (a completed packet must be approved prior to the first site visit)
  3. First site visit will include onsite training
