Produce on Wheels Delivers Good Nutrition and New Favorites to Seniors in Northern Nevada
“I’m 79 years old and have been through some bad health conditions, and I know that this good nutrition is helping keep me on my feet. And I’m really grateful for that.” -Ann
We met Ann on a sunny, spring day while she was visiting a Produce on Wheels distribution held near her home in Reno. Now retired, Ann spent her career working for various federal offices, including Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, and Veteran’s Affairs – including nearly 13 years working at the VA hospital in Reno. She tells us that she’s proud to have spent the last years of her career serving those who served our country.
Like so many retired seniors, Ann lives on a fixed income, relying on her Social Security and a small pension. As the cost of living has continued to climb since her retirement in 2007, she’s found it difficult for her income to stretch as far as she needs to cover all of her expenses. Ann tells us she’s been visiting Produce on Wheels since the program first began visiting her neighborhood, and she’s very grateful not only for the help it provides her to have enough food to eat but, especially, for the fact that the focus is on nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables.
“I wonder if I’d still be standing here if it wasn’t for this assistance, giving me produce that’s fresh and healthy. If I could afford it in the stores, I would buy it, but I pretty much wait to see what they have here,” Ann says. “They’ve brought so many different vegetables that I’d maybe heard of once or twice but never tried. My favorites are kohlrabi and collard greens. I love to cook them up with mushrooms and maybe some onion – it’s so good. It makes a nice bowl full of hearty, healthy, and delicious food.”
So many of our community’s seniors live on fixed incomes like Ann, and we know that can leave them faced with impossible choices when it comes to accessing the nutritious foods they need to still healthy while covering other household and medical expenses. That is why we’re so thankful to our community for making programs like Produce on Wheels possible.
