Every year in September, members of Feeding America come together for Hunger Action Month to raise awareness not only of the issue of food insecurity but of the incredible impact our community can have when we take action together. Throughout the month, we’re asking our community partners to raise their voices and take action with us on behalf of the 120,000 people who turn to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada each month for food assistance.
There are so many small, but impactful, ways that community members can get involved and make a huge difference in the fight against hunger in our community. Which ones will YOU choose?
Orange is the color of hunger awareness, and that means it’s our favorite color througout the month of September. Going orange with us on Hunger Action Day and all month long is a great way to take action this month.
Looking for the perfect backdrop for your Go Orange-inspired social posts? Check out one of our favorite sculptures turning orange in the spirit of Hunger Action Month! The LOVE sign at Renown Regional Medical Center will be orange all month long, and the Reno Aces are turning the HOME sculpture at Greater Nevada Field orange during part of the month as well, including for the Hunger Action Month Kick-off on September 1 and on September 23 for Hunger Action Day. The diamonds at GSR will glow orange for Hunger Action Day, and Circus Circus will go orange the week of September 23-30.
Help us spread awareness on Hunger Action Day by wearing orange and challenging your friends and family to do the same. Snap a selfie and tag us on social media so we can be sure to compliment just how great fighting hunger looks on you!
Add a little sizzle to your month with the Battle Born Burger Showcase-Showdown. Whether you visit one (or more!) of our participating Burger Showcase restaurants, come hang out with us for the evening at the Burger Showdown, or do both, every tasty bite of your Battle Born Burgers will fight hunger in our community. (In case you’re wondering, we definitely vote for doing both!)
Burger Showcase: September 1-25
Which Burger Showcase participant will you visit first? Check out the list of participating restaurants and start making your plans now. Every burger sold during the Burger Showcase will provide 6 meals for neighbors in need, so you have our permission to visit each of them throughout the month. Besides, how else will you know who to give your vote to for the Showcase People’s Choice award?
Burger Showdown: September 30 ~ 5-8pm | Idlewild Park
Just when you thought we’d burgered as much as we can burger, it’s time for the inaugural Battle Born Burger Showdown, a food truck party-meets burger competition being held at Idlewild Park on Friday, September 30. Spend the evening with us and our line up of competing food trucks. Stay tuned for more details on the Showdown competitors as the date gets closer.
We’re so excited to have been selected by Two Chicks as their non-profit partner for the Champagne Campaign during the month of September! All month long, a portion of sales from all champagne beverages will be donated to the Food Bank.
We love our volunteers, and we think you’ll love being one, too! If you’ve got a few hours to share, consider joining us for a session (or more!). Check out the Volunteer page here on our website to find open volunteer opportunities.
This September, intrastate rivals, the Reno Aces and Las Vegas Aviators, will meet for series in both Reno and Las Vegas, but on the field isn’t the only place they’ll be going for the win. During each series, and throughout the month of September, the teams will be rallying with their local food bank to claim the “W” in the Strike Out Hunger challenge.
Who will raise the most funds? That’s where you come in! Help your favorite team (the Aces, of course!) score the win by donating to their food bank’s Strike Out Hunger virtual food drive. The challenge ends September 30.
Friday, September 23 | 9am-Noon
Scheels – 1200 Scheels Drive, Sparks
Dick’s Sporting Goods – 5354 Meadowood Mall Circle, Reno
Our friends at Scheels have challenged Dicks Sporting Goods to see who can raise the most food on Hunger Action Day. We will be collecting food at both locations from 9am-Noon. Donating with our drive through food drives is so easy – just pull up, let us know where your donation is and/or pop your trunk, and we’ll unload your donations for you. You never even have to get out of the vehicle!
Help your favorite sporting good store do even more good. Bring canned fruits, vegetables, soups, stews and chili to either location and the community wins!
It’s the 12th Annual Run On Tuna, organized by De De Rosene and Michelle Sturge. The drive is September 1-30, and their goal this year is to raise and donate over 10,000 cans of tuna.
How to Participate:
To streamline the process, Run on Tuna is asking for financial donations that will be used to purchase cans of tuna. However, actual cans of tuna are happily accepted as well.
Contact: De De Rosene: firstname.lastname@example.org or (775) 225-0814
Note: All funds will be used to buy cans of tuna
Advocacy is an important part of the work that is being done every day at the Food Bank. The Food Bank advocates for our elected officials to come together to lift up struggling families in need of food assistance, and Hunger Action Month is a great time for you to join us in raising our voices to our elected officials. Advocating for hunger causes can be as simple as letting your elected officials know that you support the programs that help support families who are facing hunger.
Even taking the time to share with your circle of friends and family why the fight against hunger is something you’re passionate about can play an important role in advocacy. When we raise our voices together, we can make a real impact in the lives of our neighbors facing hunger.
We are excited to have this opportunity to celebrate the thoughtful ways in which our neighbors rally around one another and together say #iFightHunger. Whether you’re interested in advocating and raising awareness, making a monetary donation, volunteering your time, or participating in events, everyone can find the way that’s right for them to make a difference during Hunger Action Month.
We’d love to have you share your #HungerActionMonth fun with us. Tag us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram so we can follow along with all the great stuff you’re up to this month. Don’t forget your hashtags! #HungerActionMonth #iFightHunger
Let’s make it a great month!
