Hunger Action Month
Volunteer. Donate. Advocate. Make a Difference.
September is Hunger Action Month – a time to raise awareness of food insecurity and celebrate the incredible impact our community can make when we take action together.
From fun events and food drives to volunteering your time or raising your voice, there are so many ways to get involved this September. However you choose to act, you’ll help make our community a stronger, healthier place for everyone.
September Highlights
Battle Born Burger Showdown – September 3
The grills are hot, the burgers are bold, and the competition is delicious! Join us at Feed the Camel for the annual Battle Born Burger Showdown, where local food trucks go head-to-head to see who can create the best burger-inspired dish in town. You get to be the judge – sample the creations and cast your vote for the champion.
Bring your friends, bring your appetite, and be ready for some fun! Head on over to the Burger Showdown page to learn more and get ready for voting. We’ll have a sneak peek into this year’s entries soon.
Northern Nevada Pride – September 6
Parade begins at 10:00am | Midtown Reno
Food is a powerful ally. More than 22% of LGBTQ+ adults live in poverty and face food insecurity at twice the rate of others. We’re proud to walk in the 11th Annual Northern Nevada Pride Parade, standing in solidarity for equality, community, and access to nutritious food for all.
Go Orange for Hunger Action Day – September 9
Go orange for hunger awareness! Wear your orange, snap a photo, share it online, and stand in solidarity with neighbors facing hunger
Hunger Action Day Tour & Luncheon – September 9 | 11:30am–1:00pm
Join us for a behind-the-scenes Hunger Action Day experience at the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. Take a guided tour of our warehouse, meet the staff who make our programs possible, and enjoy a casual lunch with leadership.
Wear orange to show your support for Hunger Action Day and raise awareness about hunger in our community. Learn more about the tour and luncheon, and contact Connor to reserve your spot.
Red Robin Fundraiser – September 23 | All Day
Dine at Red Robin in Reno or Sparks and support the Food Bank at the same time. Mention the Food Bank when you order, and 20% of your bill will be donated to help provide meals for families across our region.
Volunteer.
We love our volunteers, and we think you’ll love being one, too! If you’ve got a few hours to share, consider joining us for a session (or more!). Check out the Volunteer Schedule page here on our website to find open volunteer opportunities, and schedule yourself and your crew to join us.
This September, we’re piloting morning volunteer sessions on select weekdays – a new option to make it easier for more people to get involved – and your group can be among the first to claim one of these new session times. Interested in exploring open dates? Contact Vickie to get started!

Hunger Action Month Virtual Food Drive
Bring your friends, co-workers, or family together to fight hunger virtually. Host or support a Hunger Action Month Virtual Food Drive to help us raise 15,000 meals this month. Every $1 donated provides 3 meals for our neighbors.
Run on Tuna Food Drive
It’s the 15th Annual Run On Tuna, organized by De De Rosene and Michelle Sturge. This year, the goal is to donate over 10,000 cans of tuna to help feed families across northern Nevada.
Ways to participate:
-
Donate via Venmo to De De Rosene: @Diane-Rosene or Michelle Sturge: @Michelle-Sturge
-
Support the Run on Tuna Facebook Fundraiser
-
Drop off cans or donations at Chase International, 985 Damonte Ranch Pkwy Unit 110, Reno (during business hours)
-
Host your own Run on Tuna drive at your business or organization
Contact De De Rosene via email or at (775) 225-0814 with questions. All funds go directly to purchasing cans of tuna.
Take action and help reach 10,000 cans of tuna this September.
Advocate.
Every day, families, seniors, veterans, and students make difficult choices just to put food on the table. Across Nevada, 130,000 people are at risk of losing some of their nutrition benefits under HR 1.
The upcoming Farm Bill is one of the nation’s most powerful tools to protect families and communities – and this year it’s an opportunity to strengthen the social safety net and reduce the harm caused by cuts HR 1 makes to federal nutrition programs. Programs like SNAP, TEFAP, CSFP, and FDPIR provide lifelines for children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities, helping families thrive, children succeed in school, and local businesses and communities flourish.
Your voice matters. Urge Congress to strengthen the social safety net in the Farm Bill.
Make a Difference.
This Hunger Action Month, let’s show what’s possible when we come together – as neighbors, as volunteers, as advocates, as donors, as friends.
When you take action – whether it’s giving your time, sharing your resources, or speaking up – you’re part of a community that believes no one should face hunger alone. Together, we can create lasting change – not just this September, but all year long.
Volunteer, donate, advocate, and make a difference today.
