At the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, we believe our mission goes beyond just providing food assistance. We are committed to reducing food waste, advocating for and practicing environmentally responsible initiatives, and ensuring that every nutritious meal we serve contributes to a more sustainable future. This Earth Day, we’re shining a light on how our efforts help both our communities and the planet and how you can take part in reducing food waste at home, all year round!
Food Rescue: Mission POSSIBLE!
A major part of the Food Bank’s sustainability efforts comes through our Retail Rescue program. Every year, millions of pounds of edible food are wasted, yet many families experience food insecurity. Think about that for a moment.
Our Food Sourcing Team works tirelessly to reclaim food from local businesses, grocery stores, and manufacturers, preventing it from ending up in landfills instead of on the plates of our neighbors who need it most.
How the Food Bank Reduces Food Waste
-
First In, First Out (FIFO)
By adopting the First In, First Out method, we ensure that food is distributed systematically and on rotation, minimizing spoilage and allowing our programs and partners to distribute the freshest food available to our neighbors.
These initiatives not only combat hunger but also dramatically reduce food waste, supporting a more sustainable food system in our communities. Just this year alone, our Retail Rescue program saved a total of 1.32 MILLION pounds in produce, meat, bread, and other products, and this number does not even include April.
How You Can Reduce Food Waste at Home
Reducing food waste isn’t just something large organizations can do. Small changes in daily habits can have a big impact! Here are some easy steps to reduce waste and make your kitchen more sustainable:
Plan Meals & Shop Smart
- Create a meal plan and shopping list before grocery shopping.
- Buy only what you need, especially when it comes to perishable foods.
- Avoid impulse purchases that may go unused.
Store Food Properly
- Keep produce fresh longer by storing it correctly (e.g., keep onions and potatoes separate, store leafy greens in airtight containers, place the ends of cilantro and parsley in a cup of water).
- Use airtight containers to preserve leftovers. When storing a large amount of leftovers, try putting them into smaller containers so they cool faster.
- Almost any type of food can be frozen to extend their shelf life. Learn about effective freezing techniques and how long they are good to use to while frozen and after thawing.
Follow FIFO (First In, First Out)
- Rotate older food to the front of your fridge and pantry to use first.
- Label leftovers with dates to track freshness.
Use Every Part of Ingredients
- Save vegetable scraps to make homemade broth.
- Use bones to create nutrient-rich stocks.
- Use citrus peels for natural cleaning or baking.
Get Creative with Leftovers
- Turn overripe bananas into banana bread. Tip: you can freeze bananas to make banana bread! Be sure to peel the bananas before freezing them.
- Don’t throw away stale bread! You can make deliciously seasoned homemade croutons.
- Blend wilted greens into smoothies or use them in soups.
Compost Food Scraps
- When food waste is unavoidable, composting helps return nutrients to the soil instead of being wasted.
Every small action adds up when it comes to reducing food waste and protecting the environment–it’s worth going the extra mile! Not to mention, YOU also save money by taking these steps.
Recycling and Sustainable Practices at FBNN
At the Food Bank, we believe in incorporating sustainability into our daily operations through recycling and eco-friendly practices. Some of these efforts include:
The Role of Local Sourcing in Sustainability
Another way we support environmental responsibility is by partnering with local food producers whenever possible. By sourcing food closer to home, we:
- Reduce transportation emissions and fuel consumption.
- Support our local farmers and food producers.
- Provide fresher, more nutritious options to families in our communities.
