Healthy Eating Resolutions with Support from the Food Bank of Northern Nevada
January 14, 2025
At the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, we believe our mission goes beyond just providing food assistance. We are committed to reducing food waste, advocating for and practicing environmentally responsible initiatives, and ensuring that every nutritious meal we serve contributes to a more sustainable future. This Earth Day, we’re shining a light on how our efforts help both our communities and the planet and how you can take part in reducing food waste at home, all year round!
A major part of the Food Bank’s sustainability efforts comes through our Retail Rescue program. Every year, millions of pounds of edible food are wasted, yet many families experience food insecurity. Think about that for a moment.
Our Food Sourcing Team works tirelessly to reclaim food from local businesses, grocery stores, and manufacturers, preventing it from ending up in landfills instead of on the plates of our neighbors who need it most.
Our agency partners recover food from grocery stores, ensuring fresh, quality items reach our neighbors instead of contributing to food waste.
Our team carefully and efficiently selects and transports food, maximizing our resources while maintaining variety in distributions.
By adopting the First In, First Out method, we ensure that food is distributed systematically and on rotation, minimizing spoilage and allowing our programs and partners to distribute the freshest food available to our neighbors.
The Walmart Distribution Center and Thrive Market regularly donate food to the Food Bank, supplementing donations from other manufacturers throughout the year.
These initiatives not only combat hunger but also dramatically reduce food waste, supporting a more sustainable food system in our communities. Just this year alone, our Retail Rescue program saved a total of 1.32 MILLION pounds in produce, meat, bread, and other products, and this number does not even include April.
