Why Strong Nutrition Programs Matter — and How You Can Help

Home > Posts > Why Strong Nutrition Programs Matter — and How You Can Help

At the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, we believe that everyone deserves access to nutritious food — and we work alongside our network of 155 incredible partners to help make that a reality for more than 160,000 people every month.

But we also know that fighting hunger takes more than food banks and pantries alone. It depends on strong federal nutrition programs that help families, children, and seniors weather difficult times and maintain stability.

The Support Families Count On — And Why It Needs Protecting

Federal nutrition programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) are a critical part of ensuring that our neighbors don’t go hungry. SNAP provides essential grocery assistance to hundreds of thousands of Nevadans, helping them stretch tight budgets to afford healthy food.

Right now, SNAP is facing serious threats that could mean fewer benefits and more strain on families who are already struggling to put food on the table.

Proposed changes would shift massive costs to states like Nevada, likely resulting in deep cuts to SNAP benefits — cuts that could impact more than half a million people across our state, including working families, children, and seniors. At a time when so many are already facing tough choices, these cuts would make things even harder.

A Program that Supports Families — and Our Economy

SNAP does more than help families afford groceries — it strengthens our local economy.

Every SNAP dollar spent at local stores generates economic activity, supporting jobs across the food supply chain — from farmers and truck drivers to grocery store workers. In fact, during times of economic downturn, every $1 in SNAP benefits generates up to $1.80 in local economic impact here in Nevada.

When families can buy groceries, local businesses benefit, and the entire community becomes stronger and more resilient. Cuts to SNAP wouldn’t just hurt families — they would ripple across the local economy, impacting everyone.

Why This Matters to All of Us

When families lose access to programs like SNAP, they often turn to organizations like ours for help, and we are proud to serve our community. But the charitable food network cannot meet this need alone.

We rely on strong partnerships — including federal nutrition programs — to make sure no one in our community has to face hunger. Together, these programs and community organizations form a safety net that helps families stay nourished and healthy.

How You Can Help

One of the most powerful things you can do is share your voice and let our elected officials know that cutting SNAP would hurt real people and harm our local economy right here in northern Nevada.

Our message is simple:

A SNAP state match is a SNAP benefit cut.

Together, We Can Make a Difference

Every day, we see what’s possible when a community comes together — families fed, children growing strong, and neighbors helping neighbors. By standing up for strong nutrition programs, you’re helping to ensure that no one in our community has to face hunger alone — and that our local economy stays strong and supported.

Thank you for caring and for standing with us.
