  1. Bridges Out of Poverty Event

    by jlantrip | Comments (0)

Over the years, many have tackled the very complicated issue of poverty.  For many of us who help serve low-income populations, we know that until we can alleviate issues of poverty, issues like hunger are unlikely to go away.

The Food Bank is a lead agency in a program called Bridges out of Poverty.  What truly sets this program apart from many others is that it is developed and practiced with the community together, using input and solutions from people of all economic backgrounds.

To involve as many people from the community as possible, the Food Bank of Northern Nevada is hosting an event on April 11 with renown author, Phil Devol.  Everyone is invited and the event is free, but we do need RSVPs to make sure that we have adequate space.  Click here for more details on this event.

If you are a person who serves low income people, this event will help introduce this program to you.

    Together we CAN do it!

Last night, a group of jurors toured Meadowood Mall containing this year’s 11 CANstruction entries and chose their favorites.  It’s a tough job since so much work and planning goes into to each entry in the contest.  Wednesday was spent toiling and building, some for the entire 12 hour time period.  Lessons were learned and as a result, people will be fed.  We love this event.

We would like to congratulate all of the teams who participated this year and let you know who shined even a little brighter in the minds of the jurors.

The first Honorable Mention went to “Bot Unplugs Hunger” by NV Energy and design professional Lindsay Panko.

Another Honorable Mention was awarded to “iCan Feed – an App for Hunger” by Sierra Nevada Job Corps and design professional, Pete Dube.

Best Meal went to “The Harrah’s Reno Slot Machine” built by Harrah’s Reno for being the only structure containing fruit!

Best Use of Labels went to the “Purple Hand Pledge”, depicting an anti-bullying message, built by Cold Springs Middle School.

The Award for Structural Integrity went to “Strike Out Hunger” built by Depoali Middle School and assisted by design professionals, H & K Architects.

Juror’s Favorite went to “Hunger Behind Bars” built by Jerry Whitehead’s 5/6 School within a School Program along with design professional, Dolores Henderson.

The structures will be up from now through closing time on Sunday and the public is invited to participate in Juror’s choice voting at the information desk for $1 per vote.  Each vote helps provide 4 meals to those who are hungry in our area.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada and AIANN thank everyone who supported this year’s CANstruction Event!

2012 Sponsors include AIANN, Meadowood Mall, Fred and Janice Graham, Peter Duffy, Pacific Radomes, Architects + and Pat Pusich.  Suuporters include Qdoba Mexican Grill, Save Mart Supermarkets, KTVN Channel 2, John Potter, Freeman Company, Cooks Photography, Digiprint, Nevada Blue and Grand Sierra Resort.

    BoDawgs Gives To Back-Pack Kids

When BoDawgs opened in June of 2010, they set out to bring the best hot dawgs around to the students and community of the University.  From the very beginning, their business plan had much more on the horizon than great dawgs at a fair price.  Sure, they had the hook of each ¼ lbs BoDawg being charbroiled to perfection, placed in a fresh baked roll, smothered with secret island sauces and your choice of toppings.   They also strive to make a difference in their very own community have partnered with the Food Bank of Northern Nevada to help support the Back-Pack Kids program.   The Back-Pack Kids program provides weekend food for children in the community who are homeless or chronically hungry.  Currently, there are more than 1,100 bags per week being distributed to children in Washoe County and each bag costs $5.  The program is supported 100% by donations from the community and the Food Bank is so grateful for partners such as BoDawgs!   Thank you so much to BoDawgs for their commitment to our community, to the Food Bank, and to these kids.

For more information on BoDawgs and where you can find them, check out www.bodawgsco.com or like them on Facebook!
