  1. Advocacy Alert!

    by jlantrip | Comments (0)

If you have ever wanted to get more involved to fight for hunger issues, this is your chance.

    Call Congress today!

Right now, a special Congressional “Super Committee" is working to find $1.5 trillion in budget savings; and programs that help struggling Americans put food on the table are at risk of cuts. With millions of Americans all across the country facing hunger, we need all Hunger Action Center advocates to urge Congress to protect these programs.

Initial recommendations to the Super Committee are due next week, and a phone call this week can help influence the process and protect programs that feed the hungry and support food banks.

Just dial our toll free number, 1-877-698-8228, to be connected directly to your first Member of Congress’s office. Remain on the line to deliver the message to each of your three Members of Congress.

Calling Congress is easy. Here's how:

Dial 1-877-698-8228. After a brief message you’ll be asked to enter your zip code to connect directly to your first Member of Congress's office.

Tell them that you are a constituent and state the name of the town you are calling from.

    Deliver this simple message:

"I support my local food bank, and I know that they will have difficulty serving our community if anti-hunger programs like TEFAP, SNAP, CSFP, WIC  are cut or the charitable deduction tax credit is capped.  Please urge your colleagues in the Super Committee to protect these programs during the deficit negotiations.  Our nation cannot afford to increase hunger in America."

    Thank you for your support.

Boise State Fans Challenge Nevada fans to Hunger Bowl Virtual Food Drive

Fans with Cans” is the theme for Hunger Bowl IV, the University of Nevada- Boise State football game on Saturday, Oct. 1, at Bronco Stadium.  In addition to the food drive for the Idaho Food Bank that will take place at the game, Boise State has issued a challenge to Wolf Pack fans to compete in an online virtual food drive, to raise funds for hunger relief in both areas.

Wolf Pack and Bronco fans anywhere can visit hungerbowl.org and click on their team’s logo to make a cash donation. This pre-game rivalry will be highlighted on the Hunger Bowl “scoreboard” leading up to the official game day. All Wolf Pack donations will go to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada. All Boise State donations will be used for hunger relief in Idaho.

Where: The Virtual Food Drive contest is located at   hungerbowl.org .  Participants can click on their team’s logo to make a cash donation.  A constant scoreboard will be available on the website to track each team’s progress.  Please note that the scoreboard is not in real time however and takes a while to update.  The challenge continues through Saturday’s game on October 1.

Hunger is a very serious issue across the country and right here in Nevada.  One in five children in Nevada live in a home where there is not enough food for three meals per day, and one in six people in Nevada needs to seek food assistance to make ends meet.  Each dollar raised for the Food Bank of Northern Nevada can provide 4 meals to those who need them.

  3. Hot Blues and Cool Thai - Mix it Up for Hunger

    by jlantrip | Comments (0)

Call to make your reservations by noon on Thursday, to receive the $25 price. The Food Bank is receiving a very generous $20 of this ticket price.  That is 80 meals!  Call today at 331-3663. Ext 130 to reserve your spot.

Café de Thai owner Catherine Sakul had been watching a news program about the increase in children that are now homeless and food insecure in our country.  Knowing that northern Nevada is very much affected by these identical trends, she was moved to act.  She contacted the Food Bank of Northern Nevada about having a fundraiser to give back to the community.

The result is Hot Blues and Cool Thai, mix it up for hunger, on Thursday, September 22 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Café de Thai.  Tickets for the event are $25 in advance or $35 at the door.  The event includes a variety of delicious Thai appetizers sponsored by Café de Thai, a raffle, a silent auction and live blues by the Hellbusters.

Reservations for the event can be made by calling the Food Bank of Northern Nevada at 775-331-3663 ext. 130.  Café de Thai is located at 7499 Longley Lane in Reno.

The month of September is officially (as declared by Governor Sandoval, the City of Reno, the City of Sparks and Washoe County) Hunger Action Month.  As a part of Hunger Action Month a full Thirty Ways in Thirty Days calendar has been filled with events, food drives and volunteer opportunities offering ways for everyone to get involved in the fight against hunger.

Hunger is a very serious issue right here in Nevada.  One in five children in Nevada live in a home where there is not enough food for three meals per day, and one in six people in Nevada needs to seek food assistance and may tap the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to keep food on the table for their families. Throughout September, there will be opportunities to get involved.

Individuals who want to help spread the word and share our celebrity video with friends or to view the 30 Ways in 30 Days calendar, please visit the Food Bank of Northern Nevada website at fbnn.org.

  4. Food Bank Partners with Susan G. Komen

Food Bank Partners with Susan G. Komen

It’s true that as a Food Bank, our focus is feeding people.  We look for gaps in service and ways to get more food to more people every day.  We do partner with organizations that may have a different cause, but care about ours as well.  This is the case with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, here in Northern Nevada.  In the past they have taken food that was not used during the race and donated it to us for the hungry in our region.  This year, they are going one step beyond this.  They have announced their partnership with us by hosting a food drive during this year’s race. If you have always wanted to participate in the Race for the Cure, please join us on the Food Bank team.  We are walking this year and we thank our friends at Susan G. Komen for including us in their wonderful event!  If you would like to join the Food Bank team, there is still time.  Click here:  Join Food Bank Team!

This year's race is Sunday, October 2 at Boomtown Hotel and Casino.
