About Us

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada was founded in 1981 and incorporated in 1983 as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as a regional food distribution and support system for more than 100 different direct service, non-profit agencies serving the needy, the ill, the elderly and children. Among clients who visit emergency food program sites, 58% are over age 50 and 35% are over age 65.  Children are the most vulnerable to hunger – 37% of emergency food recipients are children under the age of 18.  To learn more about the Food Bank’s programs, see What We Do.

Our mission is to end hunger in our region through direct services, advocacy, outreach and education.

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada provides a creative link between food resources and hungry people. The Food Bank is a warehouse distribution and support system for our service programs and non-profit agencies directly serving the needy, the ill, the elderly and children in our 80,000 square mile service area. History

The Food Bank of Northern Nevada began in 1981 as a tiny food pantry at Community Services Agency of Reno. In 1983, the Food Bank became a non-profit organization. By 1988, it had a staff of 3.5 people, including Cherie Jamason, President & CEO. The annual budget was $166,000 to distribute 500,000 pounds of food from a small warehouse to 28 partner agencies.Today the Food Bank distributes more than 9 million pounds of food annually to 130 partner agencies and stretches 80,000 square miles. The annual budget is more than $16 million (including $11 million in in-kind contributions and donated assets). 153,596 people were fed last fiscal year.Learn More

A Member of Feeding America

We are a proud member of Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Its mission is to feed America's hungry through a nationwide network of member food banks and engage our country in the fight to end hunger.

Each year, the Feeding America network provides food to more than 37 million low-income people facing hunger in the United States, including 14 million children and nearly 3 million seniors. The network has more than 200 food banks serving all 50 states.
